Aim of this blog: To celebrate World Telecommunication and Information Society Day by providing a list of novels that are cautionary tales about the future, from some of the world's most famous science fiction authors, past and present. In this blog I will specifically cover novels that deal with information-based societies, and the unintended consequences that could result in an increasingly connected world.

Accelerando - The singularity is coming..

ACCELERANDO
Author: Charles Stross
Publisher: Orbit; London
Date: 2005
Accelerando is about three successive generations of a family set against the backdrop of mankind heading towards technological singularity (humans becoming one with machines). Manfred is a freelance broker in intelligence amplification technology in an increasingly fast paced world. Years later, his teenage daughter, Amber, signs up as an astronaut on the first exploration ship heading to Jupiter to escape her domineering mother. Her son, Sirhan, finds his fate entwined with all of humanity. Told through the use of a narrator, this extremely fast paced book seldom pauses but remains coherent throughout and is therefore suitable for adolescents and up.
