Aim of this blog: To celebrate World Telecommunication and Information Society Day by providing a list of novels that are cautionary tales about the future, from some of the world's most famous science fiction authors, past and present. In this blog I will specifically cover novels that deal with information-based societies, and the unintended consequences that could result in an increasingly connected world.

Neuromancer - An information based future where corporations rule..

NEUROMANCER
Author: William Gibson
Publisher: Ace Books; New York
Date: 1984

Neuromancer's protagonist is a computer hacker by the name of Henry Dorsett Case in the future dystopia of Chiba, Japan. Case ekes out a living breaking into security networks on the worldwide computer net. After he is caught stealing from his employers, Case is poisoned and prevented from accessing cyberspace (a term Gibson first created with this novel), and turns to the mysterious Armitage. While Armitage helps Case and gives him a job, his motives are initially unclear to the reader. What is it about Case that deserves helping? Credited with popularising the 'Cyberpunk' genre, Gibson takes the reader on a fast-paced journey into the world of computer hacking in the future. Case's perspective is somewhat that of an observer, so action sequences are as sudden for him as they are for the reader.
