Aim of this blog: To celebrate World Telecommunication and Information Society Day by providing a list of novels that are cautionary tales about the future, from some of the world's most famous science fiction authors, past and present. In this blog I will specifically cover novels that deal with information-based societies, and the unintended consequences that could result in an increasingly connected world.

Future Shock - Information overload and how we can overcome it..

FUTURE SHOCK

Author: Alvin Toffler
Publisher: Random House; New York
Date: 1970
The only non-fiction book in this list, Alvin Toffler claims that society is undergoing massive structural change, in which it is evolving from an industrial society to a ‘super-industrial society’. He argues that the technological change and an increasingly fast-paced world will overwhelm many, leading to an increase in disease, stress, and social disconnection. In Future Shock, Toffler predicts the then coming information age and many of the changes that have since accompanied it. Though some readers will find it a slow book, they will ultimately be rewarded for their perseverance.
